Because they don't know how long the shows will last. Whedon was smart with dollhouse. He knew how many episodes the show would run before writing the first one.
Everyone else tried to clone BSG, BSG had plenty of twists and turns and didn't answer everything yet answered enough to satisfy the show.

dont even get me started on prisonbreak.
they broke out of prison, omg they are back in prison, they broke out of another prison, omg they are back in prison.
worst concept for a show ever.

I don't think Whedon knew exactly how many episodes he'd get. Just that he found out he was getting the axe with enough time to condense a pre-planned wrap up. The war was probably intended to last all of the final season.
Any great arch should be written with the assumption of a full 5 year run with escape routes planned on a per season level.
Babylon 5 got the first part right and early enough in the fourth season found out it wasn't getting a 5th and wrapped everything up perfectly. Then, it got a fifth season which made the end feel very anti-climactic.
They should turn Misery into a series where rabid fans take over Fox and force all of their favorite shows back on the air.

I've never seen Misery but from what I've read you're prolly right.
I will say I hate cable's idea of what constitutes a season,
There are 52 weeks in a year and yet tv shows on cable average 12 to 15 episodes a year.
What is wrong with this picture?

I can't wait for Breaking Bad season 3! Weeds should be starting soon-ish as well.

Dexter is FAR away. I try to forget about shows once their finale airs so I don't think about how long till a new season starts.

Watched what I think was the season finale of Big Love last night. I really hated that show but the wife got me into it. Huge "oh sh*t" moments all through out the ep.
I'm excited about Weeds but not nearly as much as True Blood.

it only gets better, the had the first 5 years story laid out before they started, its pretty epic. and im not talking "lost" laid out where they have a start and an end and then tons of blank pages that they improv while high on crack, im talking cohesive story that leads one season the the next all the way up to the 5th season.

They do a great job with those moments on Big Love. I'm always cringing and feeling stressed out after watching it.
....wait a minute. I thought you hated True Blood because it was too much about sex. Wasn't that you?

Yep that was me until 75% into the first season. I've posted a few retractions about my disgust (probably in this thread) for the show. I've since gone on to praise it for it's acknowledgment of classic monster folklore and demonic approach.

Right on. I missed that.
I'm looking forward to that starting up as well as The Pacific this Sunday and then later Boardwalk Empire. HBO went all out this year.

I REALLY hope The Pacific is as good as Band of Brothers. One of my favorite mini series.

Man Vs. Wild is even more entertaining if you pretend Bear Grylls is drunk the whole time. Give it a shot, trust me.

man vs wild would only be entertaining to me if bear grylls died because a Taiwanese hooker didn't loosen the belt he was using for sexual asphyxiation in the hotel he was staying at while shooting "on location" in the wilderness of the jungle.
