To JailBreak, or not to JailBreak?

I have an iPhone 3Gs. I want to KILL the Stocks App. I want to hide Calculator & Weather (using search to launch them). I want to personalize my Unlock/Lock sounds with the Codec sounds from Metal Gear Solid. I want custom Text Message & Email sounds. Maybe I'd like to design a custom background for my springboard.

You know, all the s**t I should be able to do on MY device.

What are your thoughts on JailBreaking? Cydia & WinterBoard? Does Restore really "reinstate" warranty/AppleCare? Will Apple really never know if it happened?

I don't want to "unlock" it for other carriers. I don't want to install 3rd party Apps (other than those necessary to achieve the results above). I just want to customize things that should be customizable. That shouldn't be "illegal"!

I don't think it's actually illegal. Apple has simply stated that they will not provide support for any iPhone that has been jailbroken. It's your hardware...they won't 'brick' it if you jailbreak it...they just wont fix it if it has problems later on. Not sure about them being able to detect after some of the methods of 'restoring.'

Like HR said... it's not illegal. Just don't expect any support from your carrier.

I've noticed a slight slowdown in jailbroken iPhone 3GS' - you might want to think about that. As far as the unwanted apps, I created a last page that I don't don't ever go to, dumped the apps there that I dislike.
