Exactly how good is the book by Hillman Curtis? And about how much is it at the local bookstore?

    20k advertisement:
Quite often, a client has established a brand and developed logos or images to be used in an advertisement. By and large, client art cannot be altered in any way. For Flash, it's important that the client art be delivered to you in vector format. Vectors are generally very light and they redraw cleanly at any resolution. The client art for this ad[20K;Megachip-my comment]-a final logo and a processor chip-was created in Adobe Illustrator.

Although Flash can import and use Illustrator[up until 8-my comment]files directly, I often find it useful to open up the files in Freehand(you can use Illustrator too-Hillman's comment)and clean them up a bit, first. It's not unusual to find numerous unnecessary layers and/or polygons used in the construction of the image that can be removed without altering the look. The more of this you can uncover and delete, the lighter the object will be and the better it will animate. You have to figure that the computer has to redraw everything, so if your object has 20 layers of extraneous[unnecessary]junk, the computer will still have to redraw that stuff, which translates to a slower redraw/heavier file. Always think lean and mean. File clean-ups are a time-consuming tedious process, but one that's well worth the effort. (I actually get pleasure from it..but that's a subject better left to me and my therapist-Hillman's comment)

My rating:9 out of 10; very good interface, well explained lot of tips

Flash 4 Magic is a good book for actionscripting except it assumes you have some basic knowledge of actionscripting and it doesn explain things as much as we would like but still its the best there is.

    http://www.actionscript.com

i recommend you go through some actionscripting tutoails before buying the book so you can get to grips with the basics!!

    Hope that helps!!

Flash 4 Magic is a book that is emphasised on actionscripting. But it assumes you already knwo the basics and is there to help you build your actionscripting skills,it includes making games, guestbooks and other cool stuff, along with the source files. It doesnt explain things as much as we would like it to(ie. what each line of code is doing)its just like slpa it on my plater heres the script and heres what it should do.

Check it out [elvis] its the best there is!!

The Hillman Curtis book is inspiring and was a great stepping stone for me, but some of the projects involve film editing and use of other software packages.
If you don't have the software he uses or something that does the same job, you might find yourself a little frustrated you spent the money.
It is a great book and i hope to try some of the more in depth projects, but i don't have all the software yet, so i am limited to trying out half the projects.
Make sure you look through it to make sure you can get the best out of it.
    Regards
    Mike
