at how many people come in here (I work part time as a computer lab monitor at my university) and think they can scan a print of a Microsoft Word document in a regular scanner and BOOM, it's a word document again.

I try to explain that our scanners export images, not text documents.

    It's pretty funny.

You know what I tell em?

"We can't do that here, but another one of the labs on campus might have the correct software to do that."

    It's mean but I can't help it

I'd heard of some programs, but I heard they were kinda innacurate, haven't heard of Caere's though, how does it work?

Anyway, I seriously doubt if we have it on campus

This type of software is called OCR text conversion software. Many different manufacturers make these...

Omni Page pro and Text Bridge for example.

Looks good, but the $500 price tag is a little out of my price range.

Yes thanks JabezStone. OmniPage Pro is Caere's and it is 99.9% accurate. I have it but never use it. They also have one which will make forms for the internet from a paper form. I also have this one, and yes you guess it, I never use it either

    But they work really good...

I got OCR software with my scanner but it's basically sh*te. Text comes out all garbled usually. I can save it as a tiff and edit that but it's not as convenient.

    That situation can be remedied.

As you, Swishy, I have them and never use them!
A few years ago they were nice to have, even though they used to do a very lousy job. The last several years, though, so much output is in digital format that there really isn't a need for document scanning. Except, of course, in the event of plagiarism. Hmmm... maybe that's why so many college kids are asking for it, FatalJay!
