it's amazing to actually think of how big flashkit is, how great this site is, i mean, ultrashock, bless them, with all their knowledge and sophistication still have less than 2000 members (at last view).
and, risking sounding silly but, what's a 'furphy'
Furphy = peddled lie
Also the board averages over 150k views a day for a FK total of over 1.6 million views a day. WebTrends reports over 2 million views a day for FK.

A great post Steve. Are there any audio interviews with this guy?
Yep, you can listen to his last investor conference call. The number is located in the press release part of internet.com

This was a good read. Is FlashKit one of the biggest parts of internet.com?
They must get a LOT of publicity from FK.
You guys should post the stats once a week, just so all of us can marvel.
FK has the biggest daily views by someway. The next biggest in Windrv I think.

ummm...branding?
Scills,
you state Alan likes to play down branding as an effective marketing strategy, but all I've seen recently is a branding 'creep' on flashkit of internet.com material?
The result is for an irrational consumerist reason I'm getting more and more of a distaste for this branding creep, and I don't see the point in putting front page links to internet.com material on photoshop 6 reviews etc. Aren't we all pretty clued up on all this already - I mean if I need some photoshop material I'll go to a 'deep vertical' graphics web site, not some link on flashkit.
In regards to Alan's views on banner ads, that's one puppy that will be left on the wayside. When I surf for leisure, I'm not and never think of purchasing due to banner ads, and when I feel like purchasing I go to specific sites/news groups etc, so the effectiveness of banner ads in influencing consumer decisions is damned negligible. Sure you can track click-throughs better, but whats the point if there are never any clicks???

Far call, I usually look a banner ads, but hardly ever click on them. I hardly ever read ads in magazines though. Everyone is slightly different. Cross linking is good. It is a way to get information out. We don't only link to internet.com sites either ala the pope's site. We receive over 40,000 refer links a day and you can't blame internet.com for alerting people to their other sites on our homepage. You are an experience web user, but many find new content though following links from other sites.

Not to sound like I'm advertising the place or anything, but I'e actually found myself thankful that a lot of the links exist - for example, when I'm looking for some sort of Javascript; (if you've ever done a search on the web for javascript info you know that there's tons upon tons); I spend so much time here that I naturally look to the links at the bottom of the page as a reference.
And it never interferes with my experience searching for info or downloading movies on Flashkit. Just like a billboard on the side of the road doesn't stop me from driving.
And, as a total non-sequitor close to this post, I think Flashkit might benefit from some Burma-shave style advertising.
When you're looking for Flash resources...
And don't know where to go...
Surf over to Flashkit...
Your mind it'll blow!

Unfortunately Internet.com is sliding real close to junk bond status, what's the stock now $3.19 a share (I wouldn't buy it). Plus they just laid off 15% of their staff.
Personally I am not a big fan of Internet.com and am never impressed by someone with a big wallet, since when the time comes to pay the bills they usually hide it in their socks.
Here's what I see, Internet.com has really no physical product to make revenue on, there are no books, no software, t-shirts, etc...nothing. Just an income derived from banner advertising and the way advertising dollars are plummeting on the net, to rely on just that is a an axe waiting to fall.
Honestly guys I would jump ship and do flashkit on your own before internet.com's ship goes under and takes everyone with it.

hate to sound negative but don't say I didn't call it...you guys can do much better without them (and I am rarely wrong on which companies are not going to make it)
ps..this is from the NY Times Yesterday (April 2)...
Internet.com, an online publishing company that has come under pressure because of a sharp overall decline in advertising, announced today that it was laying off 60 to 70 employees, or 15 percent of its work force, including positions in New York and Darien, Conn.
Company officials said the cutbacks would affect virtually all areas of operations and would occur in the company's offices worldwide. Many workers who remain will be reassigned to new jobs.
Internet.com relies primarily on advertising from its Web sites, including atnewyork.com, which covers Silicon Alley and technology businesses in the New York region, as well as clickz.com and vcwatch.com.
Despite the cutbacks, Internet.com's shares fell 44 cents, or 12.1 percent, to $3.19 in Nasdaq trading today. The stock has fallen 92 percent from its 52-week high of $40, reached a year ago.
Most of the dismissals will take place in Internet.com's offices in Darien, New York, Los Angeles and South San Francisco, Calif. The company, based in Darien, said some of the reductions involve positions made redundant by recent acquisitions, including some of the assets of EarthWeb, which were purchased at the end of last year

Yes Mike, we talked about that with Alan, the downturn in the US economy slowed the ramp of the company. He expected to turnover 100 million this year, but will not get there so it forced him to trim the workforce as a result. Over the past year, internet.com revenues have gone from 16 million to 52 million. When ramping a company up to you must always be planning ahead. Hard to plan for a downturn. Nonetheless, when there is one, you must adjust.

Well I have to be honest now :-) I saw a link to a review of photoshop 6 and went over to the site and checked out some of internet.com's stuff. Hey, did I just kill my argument?? :-p
