Why aren't you getting one Gerbs?

I don't see a need for one yet. Not unless I have to start developing for one.

Honestly, for close to the same price you can get any number of tablets with more functionality.

Not just no, but Hell no!
That is the most useless peice of crap i have seen in a long time.
The name ipad suggests where i think people should stick those things.
I did just buy a dell axim x51v and a 32gb sd card though.

It appears we are in the minority. I just hope the hype dies down soon.

It's what I said all along about this product...not something that's even remotely targeted at the audience in this forum. Everyone in here is looking for something to design/develop on and this just ain't it. Looks like the weekend sales were definitely on the high side of all the initial estimates. Funny thing is - even with all of the shortcomings (no camera, etc.) it's still selling like a mofo. Whatever.
@Frets - Why do you hope the hype dies down? Does the popularity of a tech product cause you some level of personal concern?

apple could release a piece of crap, litterally crap from a dog, slap the apple logo on it and it would sell 500k

I'm not Frets, but for me I would hope that the hype subsides so that MS can push Courier properly, JooJoo can get some traction (it's a garage project, I'm pulling for it because of that one main reason) and HP Slate gets noticed.
Competition is good. Hype is blinding.

Gotcha - so it's more hoping that the competition steps up...JooJoo does look like an interesting alternative. I'd like to see one in person though.

There is something about the mac media machine that overtakes the market.
Rio players came out years before the ipod and never got the big media push.
At CES ballmer showed several devices with greater capacity using tablet technology. Before the Ipad was announced. It didn't go over as big as the Ipad in the media.
For another $50 one can purchase an Asus Eee and have a complete netbook/tablet.
I think a month into ownership people are really going to discover the limitations of the ipad. When they find out it doesn't run flash they'll blame adobe not apple. When they find out that it doesn't run several products that they thought it would they'll blame the software vendors not apple.

I think it's pretty sexy, and I could think of a couple of uses for it (mainly as a comic book reader and as a very expensive photo frame), but what I really hate is the lack of freedom the OS gives us: I want to install whatever browser I want there, I want flash, I want to install software that I can download directly from the developers' sites. I want to mess with the system, even if I don't have a need and never will, I want to know the OS lets me do what I want with it.

It's competition, but moreso competition that actually isn't lazy and gets away with hitting only a few things that would be good for that size/format of gadget.
Case in point... if all of a sudden people start imitating Apple as opposed to innovating, we will be stuck with a bunch of tablets that don't allow true multi-tasking, offers a limited idea of what the user wants - no video conferencing, dismissal of Adobe Flash/Microsoft Silverlight, and other limitations that are probably going to come in version 2.0 or 3.0 so they can release two more profitable versions before finally hitting the mark that many users want today. As a business, if you can get away with it, do it. Doesn't mean that savvy folks will buy into it until the whole "shiny shiny" wants are pushed to the side and the actual needs are met.
If Apple is allowed to take an early lead in something they're honestly late to the market with and they become a "standard" to imitate, it's a very serial way of thinking and very lacking imho.
And that's my ultimate fear. So yeah, I want competition to deliver something that's greater than the current iPad and then earn my money for a gadget that previously I didn't need.
Lord I hope that makes sense. It's a big jumble in my head whereas I don't want copying Apple to become the standard again like it was in cellphones.
