"What a website most definately is not (or ought not to be, in my view), is a vehicle to show the cleverness of its designer."
    ---------

I've been terribly sick the past few days and still am, and I get really dizzy looking at the screen, but I wanted to at least comment on this statement.

This person is talking about business uses of Flash, to which all I have to say is: Don't you have to be clever in business? If you're using a web site in a business sense, doesn't it make sense to be clever in the design process, to implement various ideas that will keep the viewer at your site longer, contribute to their interaction? And I'm not talking about silly uses of Flash, mouse trailers, all that nonsense. To me, it takes a far more clever person to use Flash succesfully in a subtle sense than it does for someone to take the easy way out by using elements and and various overused Flash things we see everywhere and have seen for a few years now.

What an odd stance to take, especially by someone in the creativity biz. Certainly, design can be thought of in business terms - a guy's gotta eat, no shame in that - but all successful businessmen are clever in one way or another to differing extents. Design (Flash or otherwise) can be likened to masonry, another money making skill. Granted, you may not have folks lined up around the block oohing and aahing over your new house's foundation, but hire a mason who takes no pride in his work and exhibits no ingenuity, and you wind up with a home what can be blown over by the first passing wolf. Cleverness may not always be obvious, but lack thereof is always glaringly apparent...

I think if you read further into what "spider" is saying..he's just making the agruement that useability is more important in a webpage then having "clever" things.. I don't think he's bad, he just believes that have a webpage that is user friendly and functional for a Business site is what he thinks is important. And a business site could be considered your portfolio.. anyhow.. I think papan makes a good arguement.

but that spider guy seems to be trying to compare the BEST HTML sites with the WORST Flash sites.

agree...but even if you compare the best flash sites to the best html sites, html still wins on traffic and profitability.

so from a business point of view he's right. in about 80% of the cases you just don't need flash...
So why use it then? you don't use cgi, asp, or php when you don't have to, do you?

IMHO, That's just the way it is...i wouldn't want it any different, cuz i enjoy making an html site as much as making a flash site, maybe even more...

I still get the biggest kick out of a fully database driven, though aestectically pleasing, site...but maybe that's just my fetish
