I think the performance I linked to was the same feel and vibe of the Straight Up song. So, when they slammed it for being "too serious", "not smiling enough", "not original" we ended up with him doing weird mainstream songs and trying to dance.
They should have told him that he was spot on and should change nothing. Serious, acoustic songs where he does creative things with diction and phrasing are his strength, imo.
